On Thursday 12th August, The Nisa Local store on White Laithe Approach donated £600 to St James’ Kidney Patients Association which is located at the St James’s University Hospital, Leeds. The money will be used to purchase a hand-held Doppler machine which is a vital piece of equipment used in the transplant assessment process. It can minimise possible problems post-transplant as well as reducing the time spent for attending outpatients.
The Nisa Local has been raising money for its local community through the sale of specific products in store and has been able to donate the money raised for the Association with the help of the charity Making A Difference – Locally (MADL). The MADL charity was formed in May 2008 with the intention of assisting more than 2,000 independent retailers throughout the UK with raising money for their local communities. The charity works by a specified amount of the cost of certain products promoted instore being allocated to the retailer’s MADL charity fund. For instance, this month for every Tetley Tea 240 bag pack purchased in store, 4p of the sale will go into the retailer’s MADL fund to be donated to their chosen charity.
The charity was created by Nisa-Today’s and Costcutter Supermarkets and the stores participating in the scheme are all members of Nisa-Today’s or independent retailers who are part of the Costcutter Supermarkets Group.
Mindi Singh, owner of the Nisa Local commented, “This is a vital piece of equipment and we are thrilled that our donation is funding the Doppler machine. I had a kidney transplant and I am very lucky to have received such great help and care from the Kidney Association and I know that this kind of machine is necessary for patients. We are now looking forward to raising more money through our Making A Difference – Locally fund for more good causes within our local community.”
Ian Cundell, treasurer of the charity commented, “The Doppler machine is a fundamental piece of equipment and we are thrilled that the Nisa Local store has chosen us a beneficiary of their Making A Difference – Locally fund. The machine will provide added benefits for our kidney patients and make life easier which is a prime function of our Association. I know these benefits will be gratefully received by those patients.”
