Local retailer donates £1,001 to Martlets Hospice

19/09/2011

The Nisa Local store of South Coast Road, Peacehaven has donated £1,001 to local good cause Martlets Hospice, which provides an end of life care service to adults with life limiting illnesses such as cancer. The donated monies will be used to fund this service as well as the offering of practical and emotional support for families and carers of its patients, which includes helping them through bereavement.

The Nisa Local store has been raising money for its local community through the sale of specific products in store and has been able to donate the money raised with the help of the charity Making A Difference – Locally (MADL). The MADL charity was formed in May 2008 with the intention of assisting more than 2,000 independent retailers throughout the UK with raising money for their local communities. The charity works by a specified amount of the cost of certain products promoted instore being allocated to the retailer’s MADL charity fund. For instance, this month for every Mars, Snickers or Twix ice cream purchased in store, 4p of the sale will go into the MADL fund to be donated to their chosen charity.

The charity was created by Nisa-Today’s and Costcutter Supermarkets and the stores participating in the scheme are all members of Nisa-Today’s or independent retailers who are part of the Costcutter Supermarkets Group.

Hena Patel, assistant manager of the store, comments: “We chose to donate to Martlets Hospice as it is a local charitable organisation close to our store and is used by local people. Unlike other cancer charities, the Martlets offer a specialist support service for families of its patients as well as the patients themselves, which people in our community greatly appreciate.”
