Nisa supports fundraiser in his marathon challenge!

Published on 11 August 2016

A fundraiser running 401 marathons in as many days for charity took to the streets of Scunthorpe yesterday (Wednesday 10th August) for his 345th marathon. Ben Smith, who is currently taking on the world record-breaking challenge of running 401 marathons in 401 days, was joined by around 270 local adults and children on the Scunthorpe leg of his challenge, which aims to get people active and raise £250,000 for anti-bullying charities Kidscape and Stonewall.

At around 1pm the runners stopped at Nisa’s Member Support Centre for a brief water break, where Nisa employees were on hand to cheer on the runners and hand out bottles of Heritage water (and jelly babies!).

Nisa’s charity, Making a Difference Locally, also made two donations of £1,000 to support each of the charities Ben is running on behalf of; which were presented to Ben by Gemma Wadd, Data Coordinator at Nisa, on the day. Gemma was one of the many runners who joined Ben in his Scunthorpe sprint, and one of the 64 who completed the full marathon, in addition to helping to coordinate the ‘Nisa water stop’.

Gemma commented: “Ben Smith is a truly inspirational person and I can’t even begin to comprehend how he is completing this amazing challenge. When Barry Nicol from Scunthorpe and District AC said he was going to help arrange the Scunthorpe leg of the challenge, I jumped at the chance to help out and a small team of us worked on making it a great day for Ben and one that he would remember.

“Ben was overwhelmed by the generous donations from Nisa, and was very thankful for them helping him along the way to his £250,000 target.

“Emma Fish (who also works at Nisa) and I ran with Ben despite having only ran half marathons previously, but thanks to his encouragement we both managed to complete the full marathon! It was a fantastic day and one that everyone involved will remember for a long time.”
