Proud to be 50!

Published on 07 July 2015

The family run Proudfoot Supermarket in Newby is celebrating a huge 50 year milestone of trading and to celebrate they are inviting everyone to their fun day extravaganza on Saturday 23rd May.

There will be plenty of entertainment for the whole family at the store on Scalby Road including a magician, balloon modelling, face painting, food tasting and quizzes.

On the day the store will also donate £1,000 to Burniston and Cloughton Village Hall which are also celebrating half a century in the community. In total the Proudfoot group has donated over £20,000 to the community through the Making A Difference Locally charity which raises money by shoppers purchasing products in store.

Owner Mark Proudfoot said: “It is a momentous achievement to be still successfully trading at this site after 50 years and what better way to celebrate than with the community who have supported us all these years.”

Ian Proudfoot added: “There will be so much going on including a football game, fresh pasta tasting, prizes to be won including VIP tickets for the Last Night of The Proms at Scarborough Open Air Theatre and the chance to meet local MP Robert Goodwill.

“The fun day will be the perfect way to celebrate our history and we want to make sure this day goes down in history too!”

Wilf and Pegg Proudfoot started the company with finance from his £280 gratuity from the Second World War. In 1965 the company expanded by purchasing Proctor's grocery store on the corner of Coldyhill Lane and Scalby Road and this became the Newby store.

The most recent renovation took place in 2010 when the butchery and deli departments were extended and now the family run business has four thriving supermarkets.
