Nisa colleagues volunteer support for local causes

Published on 11 November 2019

Two local causes have benefited from Nisa’s A Day to Make a Difference scheme this month with 17 colleagues involved in volunteering sessions in Scunthorpe.

The first of the volunteering sessions saw 11 colleagues from Nisa’s Partner Support Centre helping out with local homeless support charity The Forge Project’s day-to-day activities and other ad hoc jobs, including preparing and cooking meals, painting the kitchen and shower room, organising storage areas and sorting through harvest festival stock.

A further 6 colleagues spent the day at Scunthorpe General Hospital last week tending to the patient gardens, including planting up containers and filling flowerbeds with decorative stones and slate chippings, to create a tidy, peaceful outdoor space for those visiting the hospital.

The sessions were the third and fourth organised as part of Nisa’s ‘A Day to Make a Difference’ volunteering scheme, which offers Nisa employees the opportunity to spend a day volunteering, allowing them to develop new skills and gain volunteering experience, whilst helping charities and other good causes in the area.

Andrea Houghton, manager at The Forge Project, said: “It’s been phenomenal and has helped us to get things done that wouldn’t otherwise get done for months. We rely on volunteers, and the fact that 11 came along means we got 11 times the work done.

“It’s all things that we don’t have the time to do, being a very small staff team. It will also give us the space to make the training room useable as it was full of harvest festival donations.”
