Tandem club receives donation to get wheels in motion for new garage

Published on 01 October 2015

Rispins Foodmarket on Priory Road, Hull is donating £500 to The Beech Holme Tandem Club through the Making a Difference Locally charity this month. The store will be presenting the cheque donation to the cause, which provides cycling on tandems for people with sight loss, later in the month.

The Beech Holme Tandem Club allows people with sight loss the opportunity of doing something that the majority of people take for granted, by operating a tandem cycling club for the visually impaired. The group enables people with sight loss to enjoy the pleasures of cycling through the countryside with the aid of sighted front riders. The club are affiliates of the Hull and East Riding Institute for the Blind (HERIB) and have been in operation for 63 years by local members of the Cycling Touring Club.

The donation will be used towards the completion of a new storage garage for the tandems due to the expansion of the club. The project has relied solely on fundraising events and donations, and the funds from this donation will be used towards the purchase of cycle stands for the garage, to give the tandems a safe and tidy storage facility.

The money was raised through Nisa’s Making A Difference Locally charity, from customers purchasing items from the own-label Heritage range and certain branded products in store. A percentage of the sale cost of these items then goes into a virtual fund to be donated to local charities and good causes of the store owners’ choice.

Charles Rispin, store owner of Rispins Foodmarket was keen to donate to the tandem club as a member of the cycle group, the Cottingham Road Club, who will also be donating in a joint presentation to the cause later in the month.

Robin Russell, Runs Leader for Beech Holme Tandem Club commented: “The members of the Beech Holme Tandem Club thanks Making A Difference Locally for their generous donation. Without such support we would find it very difficult to continue our cycling activities. This donation will go towards providing cycle stands to ensure our tandems are stored safely and without damage”.

Rispins Foodmarket have been serving the community for five generations, and have occupied the Priory Road premises since 1934. The store and its owners are an established part of the community, and will be presenting the cheque alongside the Cottingham Road Club at the opening of the new tandem garage later in the month.
